Pineiro the Answer for the Sox?

So the Red Sox have found a closer? Depends on who you talk to or read. This move seems dumb to me.  I've always said, that Theo got way too much credit for what happened in 2004. Let's be honest that team had the greatest comeback in sports history which means they got really really hot. By all means, I'm not saying they shouldn't get credit for what they did, and I'll be the first to get on the David Ortiz bandwagon. BUT!!! Theo continues to make moves that just don't make sense. First he said, the Red Sox couldn't compete with Yankees financially. Then he pays 100 million bacon double cheeseburgers (Thanks Wendy's Marketing guys) for a guy that might work out and might not. Now, he gives Pineiro 4 million dollars. This is a guy the Mariners didn't want. In fact, no one but the Red Sox wanted him. Pineiro's  ERA last year was 6.36 in 165.2 innings. He gave up 209 hits, 23 HR's, walking 64, and striking out 87. Simply put, those numbers are not going help Boston. There's speculation galore about him, some saying that he needs to be on a contender to be good. Other's are saying that his release point is problematic. Mariners fans and BLOGS all seem to say the same thing, this guy is done. One thing is for certain, since 2002 his ERA has done one thing: climb.
I don't see how this move helps Boston at all. Once again, we at Diamond Thoughts believe Boston would have been better served by offering this four million to Foulke. At the very least they should have kept this money. Since his arm injury Joel just hasn't been good.
The Red Sox did a good job of structuring the biggest part of this contract to involve incentives based on games completed and the like. New pitching coach, John Ferrel may well be a magic worker, which of course would be great for the Sox. If reports about JP's attitude are correct though, that may not be enough. Perhaps, the best part of this move, is the Red Sox are only committed to him for one year.

Piniero scares me !

Mike Timlin will get 22 saves.

I've always wondered why no one seems to want to give Timlin a shot at being the Starter. People in "the know" seem to say that he doesn't want the role. Maybe not, but I sincerely doubt JP will be the answer.
